Churra Tensina Sheep

ORIGIN: This sheep originates from the central Huescan Pyrenees and takes its name from the Tena Valley. The sheep can today be found around Jacetania, Alto Gállego and Sobrarbe.

CHARACTERISTICS: Elongated proportions, long, wiry wool with black and brown colorations. These animals are extremely hardy and have adapted well to survive in the cold and damp of the high mountains.

MANAGEMENT AND PRODUCTION: Traditionally, this breed was seasonally migratory and, moreover was driven by the farmers to produce lambs who were sold around Easter. Nowadays, lamb production has focused around the high-quality, milk-fed lambs.

SITUATION: The history of this breed has been closely linked to droving, and the overall population has been in decline since the introduction of more intensive animal production - a decline which threatened the very existence of the breed. The breed is still officially classified as in danger of extinction, with current numbers around 7000, most of which are inscribed in the Genealogical Register. An association of breeders – ATURA (Asociación de Criadores de Ganado Ovino de Raza Churra Tensina – Churra Tensina Sheep Breeding Association) - was established in 1995 to encourage the conservation and promotion of the breed as well as maintain the Genealogical Register.
