Huescan Turkey

ORIGIN: The tradition of extensive turkey breeding in Huesca, with groups of turkeys being maintained in native meadows and with children as herds, dates back over half a century. As traditional farming methods have changed, both the overall population of birds and the number of farms has significantly diminished, such that in 2001, the last remaining establishments were limited to the immediate environs around Huesca.

CHARACTERISTICS: The ancient, slightly-built breed is characterised by its high egg production and level of maternal care, which is exhibited from the moment of laying through all the early life-cycle of the chicks. The breed's plumage is reminiscent of its wild, American ancestor, especially in the young chicks. The current breed's population is very homogenous and features two distinct variations, copper and silver.

SITUATION: While it is difficult to estimate the overall population, it is thought reproductive animals are less than 250, with the majority in the hands of breeders in the areas of Huesca, Monegros and Sobrarbe. In addition, there are some breeders in Zaragoza and Catalonia, so increasing hope is held for the recovery and continuance of this breed.
